In 1871 a group of pioneers gathered in Chicago and acquired rights to seventy thousand acres in the St. Vrain Valley. They built their town on the higher ground of the north bank of the St. Vrain River. From this location, the people could see Longs Peak, named after Colorado explorer Stephen H Long. This tall mountain in Colorado inspired the name for the small town, Longmont. Now, 130 years later, this once small town has become a small city. Shop for a day at the Longmont mall, and then satisfy your appetite with one of the many restaurants lining Main Street. Longmont is also home to the Boulder County Fairgrounds. The Boulder County Fair is held here once a year, as well as various arts and craft Fair's throughout the year.

Just five minutes from Longmont is Niwot, named for Chief Niwot, an Arapaho chieftain. Take a walk down Old Town Main Street, and see the many antique shops that line the street, and visit one of the weekly auctions. Only 45 minutes from scenic Estes Park and 30 minutes from thriving Fort Collins, you can enjoy the calm atmosphere of this city, while still enjoying the view of Longs Peak.
